An Interview with Robert Barry
For a radio broadcast held at 21 Grand Gallery in Oakland, CA and organized by Neighborhood Public Radio, the artists conducted a live interview with artist, Robert Barry via telephone from his studio in New Jersey.
In a recorded symposium in 1968, Barry said "Nothing seems to me the most potent thing in the world." True to that simple thesis, Barry developed a body of work that doesn't quite exist as painting, or sculpture, or installation, or sound. Although he denies any affiliation with conceptual art, curators, theorists and critics alike frequently label him a part of this milieu. Perhaps this is because Barry often chooses subjects for his work that are without objective form: Inert gasses, sentence fragments, telepathic messages, and radio waves.
The artists queried Barry about his own radio projects as well as other matters both conceptual and political.
