Art is...

Art is... is a series of letterpress prints on BFK Rivas archival paper.  The plates are made from pen and ink drawings based on a 1970s comic strip called "Love is...".  The originator, Kim Casali, began the strip as a series of love letters to her husband meant as a light-hearted effort to save their marriage (i.e. "Love is... being able to say you're sorry").

The Art is... series of drawings attempts to oversimplify some of the more profound notions in contemporary art in Kim-Casali-fashion using obtuse single lines of text (i.e. "Art is... sometimes just a pipe").

Each of the drawings in the series features a contemporary artist or work.  "Art is... contextualized by its surroundings" shows the Casali cherubs dressed as Vanessa Beecroft models standing in the lobby of the Guggenheim.  "Art is... often the result of a deep rooted sense of self sacrifice" shows a cherub standing in for Chris Burden crucified to the back of his VW Beetle.  "Art is... PMS 286" consists of the cherubs making a Yves Klein painting (where PMS 286 is the pantone spot color equivalent of Yves Klein blue).
